One of my fondest memories takes place in my mother’s vegetable garden. I was four years old and helping her water her lively tomato vines. I remember questioning the varying green and red hues of the tomatoes before my mom picked off a bright, red drop and handed it to me while explaining the life cycle of a plant from just a tiny seedling to its buoyant, edible form. From that moment, I was hooked and enamored by the power of plants.

My passion for food, ingredients and wellness blossomed as I studied Nutrition and took up yoga teaching as an undergraduate student at NYU. As my knowledge about systemic health and the role nutrition plays in maintaining wellness expanded, I took an interest in our body’s largest organ, our skin. The importance of feeding our skin topically with the same vital phytonutrients we put into our bodies became my focus.

For fun, I began crafting handmade body butters, face masks, serums and scrubs. My dorm took on the appearance and essence of an apothecary as dried flowers, oils and beakers covered all surface areas. My identity on campus developed as friends and classmates came to my ‘wellness sanctuary’ for facials and private yoga sessions. As I grew more confident in my formulations, I packaged the products in simple glassware, wrapped them in tissue paper and gifted them, thus igniting the beginning of LaBruna Skincare.

With my passion for nutrition and yoga, I hope to cultivate a space where skincare, food, ingredients, plants, fitness and self-care can work in symbiosis. I like to think of our skincare as “food for your face” and a way to “nourish yourself from the outside in.” Currently, I am obtaining my masters in Nutrition, so that I may bring the highest level of education and knowledge to my products, formulations and clients.

LaBruna’s LAB line officially launched in 2022. With our handmade Nina products actively making a difference in the complexation, texture, and health of skin, we wanted to offer a full line of clean, phytonutrient-rich skincare. LAB is a non-toxic, water-based line, which includes your skincare essentials such as cleansers, exfoliators and moisturizes. Our LAB products are cruelty-free, non-toxic and void of phthalates, sulfates, parabens, artificial colors and fragrances. Due to Canada's stricter ingredient regulations, we have our LAB products produced in Vancouver.

Though most people are willing to acknowledge the detrimental effects processed food has on our bodies, often, we forget about the other products we put on our bodies, even though they can be just as damaging. More and more research has proven that chemicals applied to our skin through our skincare products, gets absorbed into our bodies, cells and organs. Harmful chemicals such as Parabens, DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, BHA, and BHT, Sulfates, Phthalates, Formaldehyde, Dyes and Chemical Perfumes can lead to health issues including cancer.

At LaBruna Skincare, we keep these ingredients out of our formulations because we believe our clients should not compromise health for beauty. LaBruna Skincare products are derived from natural Plant Extracts, Vitamins, Antioxidants, and are infused with scientifically proven ingredients. Retinol, Hydroxy Acids, Vitmain C, CoQ 10, Hyaluronic Acid, and Peptides are just some of the ingredients which assist in cell regeneration, control of acne and inflammation, bacterial reduction, and the restoration of a youthful appearance.

Found in chemical sunscreens and can cause free-radical damage as it breaks down in the sun. These free radicals can accelerate the aging process and increase the risk of illness including cancer. It is likely to cause skin irritations and is poorly absorbed. Oceanographers have also found them to be damaging to marine and reef environments because they increase the rate of coral bleaching.

BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)

A toxic preservative linked to cancer, skin irritation and hormone disruption. BHA has caused benign and malignant tumors in rats, mice and hamsters. It’s also caused liver cancer in fish/ It has the potential to build up in the ecosystem overtime and is thus a pollutant concern that could impact the environment.

BHT (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)

A preservative linked to cancer and skin irritation. Long-term exposure to high doses of BHT has been shown to cause liver, thyroid and kidney problems in mice.

(DEA (diethanolamine)/ TEA (triethanolamine)/ MEA (monoethanolamine) Used as emulsifiers and fragrances. May be contaminated with chemicals like nitrosamines, which are linked to cancer.

(ceteareth-20, polysorbate-20/40, steareth-20, sodium laureth sulfates, ammonium laureth sulfate and most ingredients ending in eth) These ingredients are synthetically produced using Ethylene Oxide, a known carcinogen. They may also be irritating. Although pegs are grouped under this section, when manufactured correctly and without contaminants they are deemed safe. Our manufacturing process is of the highest quality and you will see pegs listed under our sunscreens.

(Methylene Glycol, Quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Polyoxymethylene Urea, Tosylamide/Formaldehyde Resin, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol, 5-Bromo-5-Nitro-1,3 Dioxane, Glyoxal, Methenamine, BenzylhemiformalIs) All these ingredients have formaldehyde tagging along. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and sensitizer, meaning it causes allergic reactions…has been recalled or restricted in places like the E.U, Canada, Australia and even Brazil but not the US.

Known toxicant. Can cause irritation, sensitivity and reactions. The word "fragrance" or "parfum" on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients. Many harmful ingredients such as phthalates can be hidden under this one.

Ingredient is used to lighten skin pigment and spots. It is cytotoxic, meaning it will kill cells and chromosomes if overused, which can lead to some cancers. It is also a skin irritant, a concern for the environment and outlawed in Europe, Japan and pretty much everywhere except the USA.

Methyl Cellosolve or 2-Methoxyethanol

It’s a solvent that’s used as an additive in perfumes. It can cause skin irritation and may cause effects on the central nervous system, blood, bone marrow, kidneys and liver. This ingredient has been banned in the European Union.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone

Are preservatives that can cause skin irritation, reactions and allergies. They may be toxic to the nervous system.

Octinoxate (Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate)

Used in sunscreen because of it's UV filtration benefits. It can be absorbed rapidly through skin. Octinoxate has been detected in human urine, blood and breast milk, which indicates that humans are physiologically exposed to this compound. Octinoxate is an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen and can disrupt thyroid function.

Found in chemical sunscreens…linked to cancer in mice but not ppl, however we do know it can penetrate through the skin. (study showed that when it was applied to human skin it was found in subject's urine only few hours later)

(Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Methylparaben, and Propylparaben) Parabens are used as preservatives. Certain parabens have been linked to hormone disruption and can increase the risk of breast cancer and reproductive health.

Petroleum and Paraffin

There have been links to cancer by using these ingredients and long-term use is questionable. These ingredients may also be contaminated with PAHs which are linked to cancer.

(Dibutyl Phthalate, DBP, DEHP, DEP) Sometimes these ingredients appear on product labels but many times phthalates remain unlisted and hidden under the ingredient “fragrance.” Have been linked to hormone disruption and may be linked to breast cancer.

Propylene Glycol

An ingredient penetration enhancer, it's a suspected reproductive, immune system, skin and respiratory toxin.

Used as a preservative, Triclosan may negatively affect immune function in people, may be an endocrine disruptor, and does not break down naturally in the environment, creating ecological concern.
