  OUR STORY

One of my fondest memories takes place in my grandmother’s vegetable garden. I was four years old and helping her water her lively tomato vines. I remember questioning the varying green and red hues of the tomatoes before my grandmother picked off a bright, red drop and handed it to me while explaining the life cycle of a plant from just a tiny seedling to its buoyant, edible form. From that moment, I was hooked and enamored by the power of plants.

My passion for food, ingredients and wellness blossomed as I studied Nutrition and took up yoga teaching as an undergraduate student at NYU. I began making my own soap bars, body oils, lip balms, and moisturizers once learning about all the harmful and carcinogenic ingredients in cosmetics. Although I experimented with many skin care companies, I was not completely satisfied with the products as many companies contained harmful ingredients and others lacked effective ones such as Retinol and Hydroxy Acids.

I consulted my parents, Dr. Anthony LaBruna (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and the Director of Manhattan Plastic Surgery) and Dr. Diane Hanan (NYC based Orthodontist). With my knowledge of nutrition, Dr. Hanan’s love of botanicals and science and Dr. LaBruna’s medical expertise, I envisioned a new company that could combine all our areas of expertise. LaBruna Skin Care and Nina’s handmade lines were born, products devoted to carrying clean, natural, effective, antioxidant and restorative products with anti-aging qualities.

WE LEAVE HARMFUL INGREDIENTS OUT

Though most people are willing to acknowledge the detrimental effects processed food has on our bodies, often, we forget about the other products we put on our bodies, even though they can be just as damaging. More and more research has proven that chemicals applied to our skin through our skincare products, gets absorbed into our bodies, cells and organs. Harmful chemicals such as Parabens, DMDM hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, BHA, and BHT, Sulfates, Phthalates, Formaldehyde, Dyes and Chemical Perfumes can lead to health issues including cancer.

At LaBruna Skin Care, we keep these ingredients out of our formulations because we believe our clients should not compromise health for beauty. LaBruna Skin Care products are derived from natural Plant Extracts, Vitamins, Antioxidants, and are infused with scientifically proven ingredients. Retinol, Hydroxy Acids, Vitmain C, CoQ 10, Hyaluronic Acid, and Peptides are just some of the ingredients which assist in cell regeneration, control of acne and inflammation, bacterial reduction, and the restoration of a youthful appearance.

ALUMINUM POWDER

Aluminum powder is a metallic substance composed of finely ground particles of aluminum; used as a colorant to make products white. It is a known toxin when used at high levels, is poorly absorbed by the human body, and is likely to cause skin irritations.

AVOBENZONE

Found in chemical sunscreens and can cause free-radical damage. It is likely to cause skin irritations and is poorly absorbed.

BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)

A toxic preservative linked to cancer, skin irritation and hormone disruption. BHA has caused benign and malignant tumors in rats, mice and hamsters. It’s also caused liver cancer in fish/ It has the potential to build up in the ecosystem overtime and is thus a pollutant concern that could impact the environment.

BHT (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)

A preservative linked to cancer and skin irritation. Long-term exposure to high doses of BHT has been shown to cause liver, thyroid and kidney problems in mice.

EDTA (Calcium Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA, Trisodium EDTA)

Bind to metal ions, which inactivates them. These ingredients are not linked to consumer health issues, but they are a problem for aquatic life since they don’t break down in the environment and have been found in waterways.

Ethanolamines

(DEA/TEA/MEA/ETA) Used as emulsifiers and fragrances. May be contaminated with chemicals like nitrosamines, which are linked to cancer.

Ethoxylated

(ceteareth-20, pegs, polysorbate-20/40, steareth-20, sodium laureth sulfates, ammonium laureth sulfate and most ingredients ending in eth) These ingredients are synthetically produced using Ethylene Oxide, a known carcinogen.

Pegs not in any products except our Tinted Physical Sunscreen

Formaldehyde

(Methylene Glycol, Diazolindinyl Urea, Quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantoin, Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Tosylamide/Formaldehyde Resin, Quaternium-15, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol, Polyoxymethylene Urea, 5-Bromo-5-Nitro-1,3 Dioxane, Glyoxal, Methenamine, BenzylhemiformalIs) All these ingredients have formaldehyde tagging along. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and sensitizer, meaning it causes allergic reactions…has been recalled or restricted in places like the E.U, Canada, Australia and even Brazil but not the US.

FRAGRANCE

Known toxicant. Can cause irritation, sensitivity and reactions. The word "fragrance" or "parfum" on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients. Many harmful ingredients can be hidden under this one. Banned in the European Union.

Hydroquinone

ngredient is used to lighten skin pigment and spots. It is cytotoxic, meaning it will kill cells and chromosomes if overused, which can lead to some cancers. It is also a skin irritant, a concern for the environment and outlawed in Europe, Japan and pretty much everywhere except the USA.

Methyl Cellosolve or 2-Methoxyethanol

It’s a solvent that’s used as an additive in perfumes. It can cause skin irritation and may cause effects on the central nervous system, blood, bone marrow, kidneys and liver. This ingredient has been banned in the European Union.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone

Are preservatives that can cause skin irritation, reactions and allergies. They may be toxic to the nervous system.

Oxybenzone

Found in chemical sunscreens…linked to cancer in mice but not ppl, however we do know it can penetrate through the skin. (study showed that when it was applied to human skin it was found in subject's urine only few hours later)

Parabens

(Ethylparaben, Butylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Methylparaben, and Propylparaben) Parabens are used as preservatives. Certain parabens have been linked to hormone disruption and can increase the risk of breast cancer and reproductive health.

Petroleum and Paraffin

There have been links to cancer by using these ingredients and long-term use is questionable. These ingredients may also be contaminated with PAHs which are linked to cancer.

Phthalates

(Dibutyl Phthalate, DBP, DEHP, DEP) Sometimes these ingredients appear on product labels but many times phthalates remain unlisted and hidden under the ingredient “fragrance.” Have been linked to hormone disruption and may be linked to breast cancer.
