Just as it could take an artist a lifetime to perfect their technique and skills, the inner workings of our own pursuits may never cease. We all envision becoming the utmost version of ourselves, but how do we get there? I, nor anyone has a single objective answer to this question, however, I wanted to share my insight into what techniques I am working on, which keep me motivated and inspired as I encourage inner-growth, transformation and change in my life.
1) Make Mistakes
The fear of making mistakes may be one of the most common holdbacks we experience. “What if ending my relationship is the wrong decision? What if I can’t succeed in that job? What if I don’t sound eloquent while public speaking? What if I can’t make new friends when I move?” The “what if” question is something we commonly ask ourselves. Although it is important to not act rashly and consider outcomes before making life alterations, “what ifs” can be blockers that dissuade us from reaching our potential.
When we immerse ourselves into new opportunities, settings and experiences, there is likelihood of mistakes in the forefront, however we should regard mistakes as opportunities for growth, rather than setbacks. Although that gut-wrenching sensation, which comes from embarrassment, regret or unease eventually subsides, the lessons we learn from it do not.
2) Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
Comfort is fantastic and can be one of the most satisfying emotions. There are times when we should completely absorb into the comfort, solace, and ease of a moment, however comfort can also make it arduous to step into the next venture. When a relationship, work or living situation is comfortable, it could be a sign that one is on a strong trajection, however we should be careful not to mix up complacency for comfort. In comfort, peace and acceptance are the encompassing sensations, whereas complacency may include feelings of unease, anxiety, and uncertainty. Although complacency may be an indicator of large life changes coming into play such as a move, a breakup, or a career switch, complete comfort may still be doing a disservice as an absence of challenge entails a lack of growth.
Within each major aspect of our lives, challenge should reside. For work, it’s ideal to find a combination of confidence and challenge. In romantic relationships, efforts around communication, passion and surprise should persist. With health, powerful exercise and attention to cooking clean, wholesome foods is best. Only when we feel challenged, do we grow. A metaphor to consider is that we only grow physically stronger when we exert our bodies past their comfort points.
3) Embrace a Positive Outlook
Complications in life can cause inner-quarrels, self-doubt, and apprehension. The way we view and talk to ourselves reflects in our confidence and abilities. If we exude negativity, we will likely miss opportunities for growth and connections. Ultimately, what we put out into the world, we receive. By embracing kindness and positivity, one will radiate and attract other full-hearted individuals as well as rewarding experiences into their sphere.
